Straightforward answers to the questions I hear most from buyers looking at Glendale.
Glendale splits into a handful of distinct pockets. Historic Downtown covers two neighboring areas: Old Towne, with brick-trimmed sidewalks leading to independent restaurants and antique shops, and Catlin Court, a historic district of early-1900s bungalows turned into specialty shops. About 4 miles west, the area around Westgate and State Farm Stadium is newer, with mixed-use development, restaurants and nightlife, and newer communities like Stonehaven nearby. North Glendale, often called Arrowhead, is made up largely of master-planned neighborhoods such as Arrowhead Ranch, with lakes, golf and the trails of Thunderbird Conservation Park close by. Farther west, Glendale's growth areas toward Loop 303 mix industrial development with new-home construction. Each pocket has a different mix of housing age, lot size and amenities, so it's worth looking at more than one before deciding.
Historic Downtown Glendale (Old Towne and Catlin Court together) is the go-to for antique shopping and local dining, with walkable blocks of independent shops and restaurants. About 4 miles west, Westgate Entertainment District is the more modern hangout: open-air shopping, casual restaurants and sports bars, and a dancing fountain at its center, with Tanger Outlets next door. Westgate sits right next to State Farm Stadium and Desert Diamond Arena, so on game and concert nights the whole district turns into a pre- and post-event gathering spot. For a regional mall, Arrowhead Towne Center is in north Glendale.
Sahuaro Ranch Park is the city's signature green space: a historic ranch with rose gardens, free-roaming peacocks, picnic areas, playgrounds and preserved ranch buildings. Thunderbird Conservation Park is a 1,185-acre desert preserve in the Hedgpeth Hills with miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding and bird watching, and Glendale Heroes Regional Park adds 81 acres with a lake and an archery range. For sports, State Farm Stadium hosts the Arizona Cardinals and has hosted three Super Bowls (2008, 2015 and 2023), and the Glendale-owned Camelback Ranch, just over the line in Phoenix, hosts Dodgers and White Sox spring training. Glendale also puts on signature annual events like Glendale Glitters downtown.
Loop 101 runs through Glendale, and west Glendale (Westgate and State Farm Stadium) is reached from its exits between Camelback Road and Northern Avenue. I-17 is just east of the city, and I-10 is a short drive south. Valley Metro buses serve the city, along with Glendale's own GUS shuttle and Dial-A-Ride. Downtown Phoenix is roughly 10 miles southeast of downtown Glendale, usually about 20 to 30 minutes by car outside rush hour, via I-17 or Grand Avenue (US 60). Weekday rush hour can add a lot more, so it's worth test-driving your commute before you buy.
