Straightforward answers to the questions I hear most from buyers looking at the Biltmore and Camelback area.
Biltmore mixes a historic resort, shopping, offices and homes in one part of central Phoenix. The Arizona Biltmore opened on February 23, 1929. Albert Chase McArthur was the architect of record, and Frank Lloyd Wright consulted on site for four months in 1928 on the textile-block construction, so Wright is often mistakenly credited as the architect. Biltmore Fashion Park, which opened in 1963, is about half a mile south at 24th Street and Camelback Road. Housing ranges from estates to condos and townhomes, so tour more than one type. The outline on the map follows the City of Phoenix boundary for the Biltmore Area Partnership, roughly 16th to 44th Street. Condo buildings and subdivisions have their own HOAs, so confirm for each address.
Biltmore Fashion Park, at 2502 E Camelback Rd, is the area's main shopping center and opened in 1963. Macy's has been one of its anchors, and the owner, RED Development, bought the center in 2024 and has proposed redeveloping it, so check current stores before you go. The original True Food Kitchen, open since October 2008, is in Suite 135. Nearby on Camelback Road, The Gladly, at 2201 E Camelback Rd, is a restaurant and whiskey bar, Hillstone is at 2650 E Camelback Rd, and Chestnut, at 2398 E Camelback Rd, serves breakfast and lunch with a happy hour from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday through Friday. Press Coffee Roasters is at 2390 E Camelback Rd, and The Camby hotel, at 2401 E Camelback Rd, has Cartel Coffee. The Shops at Town & Country, at 2131 E Camelback Rd, has Whole Foods, Trader Joe's and Nordstrom Rack, plus Pizzeria Bianco and Tratto, both from chef Chris Bianco, at 4743 N 20th St. Matt's Big Breakfast, at 3118 E Camelback Rd, serves breakfast and lunch, and Duck and Decanter, at 1651 E Camelback Rd, is a family deli and market that opened in 1972. Harvey's Wineburger, at 4812 N 16th St, is a neighborhood burger spot with a bar. Hours and menus change, so check before you go.
From Biltmore Fashion Park, downtown Phoenix and Sky Harbor Airport are each about 5 miles away in a straight line, Old Town Scottsdale is about 6 miles and Tempe is about 8. Actual drive times depend on the route and the hour, so test the drive at the times you would commute. Biltmore is central to the Valley, and the Camelback Road corridor has offices, shopping and homes close together, which is why some residents live and work in the same area. The outline is wide, from about 16th Street to 44th Street, so distances to the airport, downtown and Scottsdale vary by address.
Piestewa Peak is about 2 miles north of Biltmore Fashion Park in a straight line. Its Summit Trail starts at the Mesquite Trailhead, 2701 E Piestewa Peak Dr, just outside the map outline. The City of Phoenix lists the trail at about 1.2 miles with about 1,200 feet of elevation gain, rates it extremely difficult, and says water, parking and restrooms are available at the base. The trailhead is open 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. and the trail from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. The Arizona Biltmore Golf Club, at 2400 E Missouri Ave, has two courses: the Adobe, a par 71 of 6,430 yards, and the Links, a par 71 of 6,300 yards with five lakes. Check with the club for access and rates, and check trail conditions with the City before you go.
