Straightforward answers to the questions I hear most from buyers looking at South Mountain and Laveen.
This outline joins two City of Phoenix urban villages, Laveen and South Mountain, and covers about 70 square miles that run about 15 miles east to west. The City describes Laveen as sitting between South Mountain and the Salt River, with natural beauty and agricultural heritage. Farmers and dairymen first settled it in 1884, and today it mixes farmland, horse properties and newer subdivisions. InfoArizona describes Villages of Laveen Ranch as a planned community. South Mountain Park and Preserve forms the southern edge. Subdivisions have their own HOAs and rules, so confirm dues and rules for each address.
Mimi Forno Italiano, at 3624 W Baseline Rd, Ste 174, serves pizza, pasta and appetizers. Owner Domenico Cavallo opened it in 2018. Del Monte Market, at 2659 W Dobbins Rd, was built in 1908, is on the Phoenix Historic Property Register and is described as Arizona's oldest continually operating market. It sells groceries and tamales. The Farm at South Mountain, at 6106 S 32nd St, has pecan trees and restaurants on land that was divided into two-acre parcels in the 1920s. The map also shows Mariscos A Todo Mar, at 2632 S 83rd Ave, a Sinaloa-style seafood restaurant about 2.3 miles north of the outline. Rebecca's picks are Mimi Forno Italiano, Mariscos A Todo Mar, Aguila Golf Course and the Farm. Hours and menus change, so check before you go.
South Mountain Park and Preserve covers more than 16,000 acres, and the City says it has more than 100 miles of trails. Dobbins Lookout, at 2,330 feet, is the highest point open to the public. Aguila Park and Community Center, at 7835 S 35th Ave, was renamed in August 2026 and was formerly Cesar Chavez Park. Aguila Golf Course, at 8440 S 35th Ave, is a public 18-hole City course designed by Gary Panks. Laveen Heritage Park, at 6925 W Meadows Loop, officially opened in September 2025 and has a 9-hole disc golf course. Harvest Park, at 5400 W Gwen St, is a 10-acre park that opened in March 2024. Check hours and event dates with the City.
The Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway runs through Laveen, with interchanges at Dobbins Road, Baseline Road, Southern Avenue and Broadway Road, and connects to I-10 to the north. The extension through most of Laveen opened on December 21, 2019. Baseline Road is the main east-west road through the area. The area is large, so the best route depends on where you live. Test your commute at the times you would actually travel before you decide.
